On the Noland Trail hike, there were many interactions to be had with the nature that surrounded us. Before we had even stepped into the massive cluster of trees, we had come across a severed branch of crumbling leaves. Ordinarily, I would pay such a thing no mind. Yet on this day, this minor piece of our environment was brought to our attention. We were asked to contemplate what possible scenario must have occurred in order for nature to have been in its present state, regarding the detached tree limb. Many suggestions were made known to the rest of the class. Perhaps it had been ripped off out of absolute boredom. Maybe it had simply fallen off of the tree’s body in the midst of an immense storm.
We noted that the dying branch had achieved a great amount of distance from any of its possible trees of origin. This brought about the possibility of a great wind sweeping up the branch to bring it to its location. Conceivably it had been dragged from the heart of the wooded area, underwent and been a part of the whole Noland Trail at one point, and left as rubbish by its co-voyager, exposed and out casted in the clearing of open grass.
It is unquestionable that the severed branch of crumbling leaves sent out an energy force to convey its existence. We all picked up on a sense of its story, and although it was only for a small amount of time, I was allowed to hear the natural voice of the wilderness.
