Chelsea Ottaviani- Outside Reading- The Omnivore’s Dilemma
When I was assigned this book for my Biology Topics in Ecology class, I was completely relieved that I wouldn’t be reading the average textbook. When I cracked the book’s spine, I soon discovered that it was one of the most factual and knowledgeable books I had ever started to read. As I went from chapter to chapter, I learned of all the ridiculous things that American’s have been eating, of all the horrible things we take into our bodies, and of all the food that we really should be eating instead of what we have been eating. One of the most prominent themes of the book was how healthy growing your own food is. I felt that this connected to our course because by growing your own food, you are thereby connecting with the wilderness around you. There is something amazing about the achievement felt by working with the wilderness that surrounds you and by finding that you can truly sustain yourself by the products given to you in the environment. If everyone were to take into consideration how unhealthy the food we find in our super markets truly is, and how easy it is to grown your own food from your own backyard, millions of people would change their lifestyle in a heartbeat.
