One of the axioms -- Peter Michalski

looking over the four axioms from Landscapes of the Sacred i realized to me at least that the second one, sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary, is the most powerful and revealing one. I took a trip to Washington state two summers ago to do some volunteer work. We set up camp along side the Columbia river in a place not designated for camping. the area was filled with tall grass and bushes but soon a path was forming from us constantly walking over it. i can still remember exactly how everything was set up. the kitchen was set up 20-30 yards away under a huge pine tree with branches that formed a dome under the tree. there was even an apricot tree growing right near there that supplied a nice fresh snack. the bathroom was up a hill behind a giant bush in between the sleeping and kitchen area. we spent a week camping there and every day it felt more like home. i soon found my own fishing spot where i would relax and read a book with hopes that my line would catch something. even if i didn't get i bite i didn't mind because watching the sunset across the bare rolling hills was enough for me to want to lay there. The camping spot we chose was completely random but it was so perfect for us and the time spent there was so amazing that ill never forget it. the idea that sacred place is ordinary but made extraordinary is true in it entirety. ordinary places are where we can feel the most comfortable and where we stop looking for a connection or experience and let it find us.
