Cameron Browne- Memories make a place sacred
In Lane’s book, Landscapes of the Sacred, he states, “We form significant locales out of our memories, our relationships with others, a whole network of associations sacred and profane” (Lane 24). I believe what Lane is saying her is without memories a place is just a place not of importance, but with memories a place can mean so much more to a person. For example a house can just be a house to people walking by but my house is so much more to me. It is my comfort when I am alone, and it is my shelter to keep me safe. I love everything about my house the way it looks and feels to me. But my next door neighbor or a person just walking their dog passing by on the street it is just a house in the neighborhood where a family lives. My house is sacred to me because of the wonderful memories I had there. Christmas memories putting up the tree with my family and signing jingle bells as we work putting on our homemade ornaments is one of my favorite times of the year. Memories like those make a building like a house a sacred place for a person. Without memories there it would just be a normal house with four walls and a roof.
