The Jouney Symbol
Another aspect of sacredness, which is depicted in the movie Cold Fever, is the journey symbol. The journey symbol is big in mythology and especially in Christian mystical literature. According to Michael Graves, the journey symbol can appear in many ways such as “the ascent of the mountain, the crossing of a sea, a march through the desert, progressive entrance into the holy precincts of a temple, or the climbing of a ladder from earth to heaven.” Graves also says that, “The journey usually involves a call, a conversion, divine assistance and guidance, encounter with obstacles, and ultimate success” or union. In looking at Cold Fever the call was his parents appearing on the tv screen when he didn’t even turn it on. It was at this point that he decided to go to Iceland. He encountered many obstacles along the way including car trouble, weather, the location of his parents death, and of course the Americans that wanted to kill him. He found divine assistance when he met the man at the last lodge he stayed at. The man offered to help him get to the river by an off road jeep and eventually horses. At the end he has success and essentially union with his parents and the land.
