Greenbrier Trail - Martin Konkel

I’m spending the Thanksgiving Holiday in West Virginia and yesterday I came across a trail called The Greenbrier Trail. I’ve heard of it, but until now never knew exactly where it was. I started my journey in Caldwell and walked a little over 3 miles into the trail, then turned around and walked back. I had no idea what to expect, and I was quite shocked to see that it was all paved gravel, and then I picked up a free map alongside the trail and saw that it was nearly 80miles long! Best part of all though, you can ride a bike on it.
I didn’t get very far that day or see much considering the trails length. The trail runs along the river following some cliffs (it was a old railway for the local logging industry). I walked past a part in the mountain where it was about 10 degrees cooler then the surrounding air. Coming to these mountains all my life I knew this must meant there was some sort of cave nearby, so I started to climb up the waterfall. I made it about 20ft up, 60ft in or so and there was just so much more to go. I did not find the cave, but then again I still could not see where the spring was coming from; perhaps next time.
Watch videos on the AT in class is pretty intriguing, but I could never physically or mentally endure such a long distance on foot. However, this trail is flat, packed, and I can’t wait till Spring Break so I can ride a bike down the whole 80miles. There are places to stay along the trail (like on the AT) and the river is always besides you. I just wish I had found about this place sooner, especially since it’s always been so close to where I’ve been coming to for all these years.
