The Mountains-Rebecca Culbreth

Here at CNU, everything is so flat. There are few hills and the mountains are out of sight. I grew up surrounded by mountains. Where I'm from, everywhere you look, you can see the mountains in the distance, and you have to search for a flat spot (my city is known as The City of 7 Hills... but trust me, there are a few more than 7). Every time I go home, I look forward to hitting the mountains. For me the mountains are a kind of catharsis... they give me a sense of home and safety. When I first arrived here at CNU, I was shocked at how flat the land was. But never was it more real to me than when I was driving back from fall break, watching the mountains dissapear in my rear view mirror. For some reason, I was overcome with sadness as I watched them grow smaller. I have come to like the are around here much better, but nothing will ever replace the feeling I get when I see those mountains up ahead.
